Your First Digital Product in 7 Days: A Step-by-Step Guide

The most common question I get from people who want to start earning passive income online is: 'I want to create a digital product, but I don't know where to start.' This is the exact process I used to make my first e-book.

The most common question I get from people who want to start earning passive income online is: “I want to create a digital product, but I don’t know where to start.”

This is the exact process I used to make my first e-book. Follow these steps and you can launch your own digital product this week and start earning passive income.

You don’t need to invest any money or have design experience. There are no calls involved. All the tools I mention are free, though some, like Canva, offer paid options. You can make your product without spending a cent.

Day 1: Choose your topic (30 minutes)

Your digital product should answer one specific question that you already know the answer to.

Not a big question. Not a book. One specific, actionable question.

Examples:

“How do I set up an online store in one weekend?”

“How do I create professional graphics without a designer?”

“What are the 5 tools I need to start earning online?”

Ask yourself: if someone paid $10 for the answer to this question, would they feel it was worth it?

If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few idea prompts to help you brainstorm:

  • What is a shortcut you wish someone had told you earlier in your career?

  • Is there a common mistake you see people make in your field?

  • What do friends or colleagues often ask you for help with?

  • Think about your recent wins—can you teach someone how you did it?

  • Are you part of a niche community or hobby? What solutions would help beginners there?

Popular easy-to-start niches include:

  • Social media graphics templates

  • Study guides or cheat sheets for specific skills

  • Mini-courses for mastering an app or tool

  • Simple budgeting or habit trackers

Pick the idea that excites you and solves a real problem. This way, you’ll make something people actually want and have a clear path to your first sale.

If yes, that’s your product.

Day 2: Write your outline (1 hour)

Open a Google Doc. Write the question your product answers at the top.

Then list every sub-question a reader would need answered along the way.

That list is your table of contents.

Try to have 8 to 15 chapters or sections. Each should be about 200 to 400 words long.

Days 3 and 4: Write the content (2 to 3 hours total)

Write one section at a time. Don’t worry about editing or overthinking. Just get your ideas down.

Imagine you’re explaining this to a friend who’s new to the topic. Keep your language simple, share examples, and include your own story.

Your experience is what makes your product unique. No one else has lived your story.

Day 5: Design in Canva (1 to 2 hours)

In Canva, search for “e-book” templates and pick one that looks clean and simple.

Swap out the template text for your own content. Add your logo, name, and a photo if you have one.

Export as PDF.

That’s it—your product is ready. Start selling today and share what you know with others.

Day 6: Set up your sales page (1 hour)

Create a free Gumroad account (gumroad.com), upload your PDF, and set your price. If Gumroad isn’t right for you, try Payhip (payhip.com), Ko-fi (ko-fi.com), or Hotmart (Hotmart.com). Both are free and simple to use. Pick the platform that suits you best.

Write a three-sentence description:

Who it’s for

What they’ll learn

What result will they get?

That’s it. Publish your sales page and invite your network to take a look.

Day 7: Launch (post on Instagram)

Head to Instagram and post a Reel or graphic. Use this caption format:

“I just published [title]. It’s for [who]. You’ll learn [what]. Link in bio.”

Tag your community and ask your followers to share your post.

If you’re just starting and don’t have many followers, join Facebook Groups or online communities about your topic. Share tips, answer questions, and mention your product when it fits (but don’t spam). You can also connect with other creators for small collaborations or shoutouts. Look for group chats, newsletters, or digital product roundups to share your launch. Even with a small audience, your first customers often come from showing up and sharing what you know.

You could make your first sale today. Take action and go for it.

What your first product won’t be:

It won’t be perfect. It won’t be long. It won’t make you rich overnight.

But it will be proof that you took action, a launch strategy you can use again, and your first real step toward earning passive income.

Every product I sell today started exactly this way.
